Intensive dredging in the approach channel of both the East and West Wharf and widening/realignment of the navigational channel enabled the KPT to accommodate considerably larger vessels during the period 2008-10. The KPT achieved the 12-meter draft in Karachi Harbour especially in the vicinity of berths nos. 26 to 30 (KICT) at West Wharf and 6 to 9 (PICT) at East Wharf, said a statement Friday.
"HYUNDAI ADMIRAL" carrying 4500 TEUS berthed at West Wharf on May 9, 2008. This was the beginning of an end. The KPT further augmented the port facilities and berthing capability was further upgraded to accommodate even larger vessels carrying 5000 to 5500 TEUs. KPT is now proudly accommodating 295 meters long, 12-metres larger vessels, it concluded.-PR
