Punjab University VC Professor Dr Mujahid Kamran has stated that the varsity is striving to increase the number of quality PhD faculty in order to ensure that only high quality graduates and researches are produced on the campus. This was stated by him while briefing the visiting 10-member media delegation from Bangladesh about the academic and research activities and overall contribution of the varsity at the provincial and national level in his office committee room here on Friday.
Pro vice-chancellor Dr Jamil Anwar Chaudhry, Registrar Dr Muhammad Naeem Khan and Director External Linkages Maria Maldonado was also present. The vice-chancellor said highly knowledgeable and expert faculty is considered to be the backbone in the promotion of higher education because their excellence and expertise drastically affects the quality of educated lot they produce.
He said Punjab University is the largest provider of high quality education and research with a student community of over 30,000 and has a teaching tradition that goes back more than 128 years. He said remarkable progress has been achieved under its ongoing PhD programme with the consequence that against the annual average of 41 PhDs during the last 18 years (1990-2007), an annual average of 116 PhDs has been achieved during the last two years.
Similarly, against the national average of 22 percent of PhDs to faculty members, the current average of PU PhDs to faculty has risen to 33 percent, he added. He said we are offering outstanding support to the students fraternity in all areas of university life in addition to extending them an enabling academic environment to achieve excellence in their educational and research pursuits.
He also expressed the hope that in view of our longstanding religious, spiritual and cultural bonds of brotherhood with the Bangladeshi brethren, exchange of delegations of faculty and students between the universities of both the countries can further strengthen the mutual relations of Pakistan and Bangladesh.
