We all wish our smartphones to have a camera that can capture photos like a DSLR does. Scientists have just given us a way to fulfill our dream.

Scientists have created an Artificially Intelligent neural network system that focuses only on providing our photos a ‘DSLR-quality’ look.  Though not being perfect and flawless, the technology is a step forward to provide the same picture quality with just our smartphones.

The researchers took pictures of the same scenery first with a phone and then with a DSLR. They trained a deep learning system through these images. The new network required to view two sets of images from various cameras in order to understand how to apply image quality from one picture to the other. The user can thus, feed any picture and get the desired high quality camera results, reported Engagdet.

The results however, are not the ideal, but still way better than the original image. Yet, the novel approach seems to have accomplished its main objective of making pictures better than they are and improving the baseline image quality, especially when it is used in low-end phones that fail to take exceptional shots.

One drawback of the network is that it cannot add details that were not already in the picture such as if the smartphone is not good at low-light shots; the network won’t be able to rectify that part.

Furthermore, scientists aim to advance the neural network more to ‘correct’ the shooting conditions. For instance, in a rainy day the AI network can make the picture seem bright and sunny itself.
