09 Jul, 2010

The Managing Director, Pakistan Electric Power Company (Pepco) confessed in the meeting of National Assembly's Standing Committee that Pepco has to increase electricity rate by 7.5 percent because 20 percent of this increase would compensate electricity theft.
President, Sialkot Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Mohammad Ishaq Butt, in a press statement said that the government's confession shows the negligence on the part of Wapda staff in performing their professional responsibilities. It was imperative that the government would have taken action against the thieves whereas the government has put this burden on the shoulders of already crushed common people, he said.
The SCCI President further stated that the current situation was creating problems for the masses of the country adding that the increase in the prices of electricity has become additional burden on the consumers. Butt said electricity rates should be decreased immediately and necessary action should be taken to control electricity theft.
