Fast approaching Ramazan provides impetus to sharply rising commodities prices

The fast approaching holy month of Ramazan is being greeted by most needed commodities with sharp rise, perhaps influenced also by firmer trend in foreign markets such as gram, gram 50x50, dal 50x50, peas Canada, black pepper, moong, powder milk and some superior rice during the week.
On the opening day, gram 50x50 scaled higher by Rs 75 to Rs 4725, while the better type was quoted at Rs 4925. Gram dal 50x50 rose by Rs 100 to Rs 5400. Yellow peas from Canada rose by Rs 50 to Rs 3100, while the other variety was quoted at Rs 3250. Gram dal peas Canada rose by same amount to Rs 3400, while the other quality was quoted at Rs 3550. Irri 6 Sindh was quoted higher at Rs 2725, while the other type was at Rs 2750. Wheat old and new with bardana was lower by Rs 35 to Rs 2375, while the other was quoted at Rs 2390. Gur scaled higher by Rs 200 to Rs 7500, while the lower type was put at Rs 6600 and Khandsari shed Rs 200 to Rs 7600, while the other type was quoted at Rs 7000. Cottonseed oilcake low type lost Rs 10 to Rs 1050, while better type was quoted at Rs 1080.
On Jodia Bazaar kirana items (per 40 kg) white pepper was down by Rs 600 to Rs 21,400. Black pepper from Singapore rose by Rs 1800 to Rs 14,600 black pepper from Ceylon rose by Rs 1800 to Rs 14,600, black pepper from Brazil rose by Rs 1700 to Rs 15,500. Copra from India ended down by Rs 150 to Rs 4150, Ajwain ended with gain of Rs 1200 to Rs 6200, and kalonji ended higher by Rs 900 to Rs 8200.
On Tuesday moong prices rose sharply (from Sindh) by Rs 250 to Rs 9000 and moong from Punjab gained Rs 1050 to Rs 7800. Gur better type shed Rs 100 to Rs 7400, while the other type was quoted at Rs 6600. Irri 6 Sindh lost Rs 25 to Rs 2700, while the other variety was quoted at Rs 2725. Basmati 386 (new) low type rose by Rs 300 to Rs 3900, while the better type gained Rs 200 to Rs 4000 and, cottonseed oilcake with bag was higher by Rs 20 to Rs 1080, while the other type was quoted at Rs 1100.
On Wednesday Ramazan effect was pronounced on commodities in display.
The yellow peas Canada rose again by Rs 100 to Rs 3200, while the other quality was quoted at Rs 3350. Yellow peas dal Canada gained same amount to Rs 3500, while other variety was quoted at Rs 3625. Rapeseed Mirpur low type was higher by Rs 25 to Rs 1650, while the other type rose by Rs 10 to Rs 1650. On the cereals side gur again gained Rs 200 to Rs 6800, while better type rose by Rs 100 to Rs 7500.
On Jodia Bazaar powder milk (per bag of 25-kg) Irish skimmed quoted at Rs 7,500, while Olden Burger rose by Rs 700 to Rs 8700, Vegetable Euro Gold quoted at Rs 8200, while corolac rose by Rs 200 to Rs 8700.
On Thursday masoor Canada was down owing to rains and normal buyers stayed away. It was down by Rs 200 to Rs 7500, masoor dal Canada was lower by Rs 400 to Rs 8500, urad Burma was registered at Rs 4600. Cottonseed from Sindh was down by Rs 30 to Rs 1050, while the better type was down by Rs 1080.
On Jodia Bazaar jute goods was altered on the downside. Jute goods twine (per kg) 20x3 brown ended down by Rs 10 to Rs 102, 16x3 CRT/Indus shed Rs 10 to Rs 102, 8x3 shed by Rs 10 to Rs 175 and 40x3 brow lost Rs 8 to Rs 100.
On Friday as usual no transaction took place, as most of the market players were busy in preparation for Juma prayers.
On Saturday commodities and oilseeds rates were not issued, according to the merchants' group press release, markets were closed on account of Shab-e-Meraj holiday.
On Jodia Bazaar pineapple closed higher. The change was: (Per carton): Polac edged up by Rs 60 to Rs 1,475. The following change was noted in sweetened milk.
(Per carton): Polac finished down by Rs 100 to Rs 2,500.
