Pakistan committed to cleaner, healthier environment: Naek

Chairman Senate Farooq H. Naek on Wednesday reaffirmed Pakistan's resolve to environmental protection goals and said that country will remain committed to greener, cleaner and healthier environment. He was addressing the 2nd Session of the 4-day International Parliamentary Conference on Climate Change being organised in London, said a press release reached here from the British Capital.
Other members of the delegation include Senators Raza Rabbani, Islamuddin Sheikh, Abdul Nabi Bangash, Gulshan Saeed besides Speaker of the Balochistan Assembly, Muhammad Aslam Bhootani. The Chairman Senate said Pakistan has enacted and implemented laws for protection of environment.
Naek said that the concentration of Green House Gases (GHG) is rising and causing global warming. Pakistan contributes only 0.4 percent world's total GHG it is 135 in global ranking. He expressed the confidence that the conference would provide a useful opportunity to the participants to share their experiences and to replicate best practices and procedures.
The Chairman also informed that the government has established environmental tribunals for trial of persons responsible for polluting the environment. He disclosed that Pakistan's share in total global emissions is 0.4 percent only and it is the largest user of CNG in Asia.
The country, he said, is a signatory to major international conventions and protocols for environmental protection including the Kyoto, Stockholm convention on Persistent organic pollution and Cartagena Protocols on Bio Safety to CBD. Other members of the delegation, expressed the hoped to gain benefit from the conference in obtaining international perspective on issues pertaining to climate change and with the focus of conference on adapting the global themes to local settings they will certainly contribute positively towards policies on climate. They said that National Conservation Goals are being pursued by the government with sincerity and determination.
