Protective bunds: ministers review progress

08 Aug, 2010

Sindh Minister for Fisheries, Zahid Ali Bhurgri and Minister for Special Education, Syed Ali Nawaz Shah Rizvi, assigned to look after the ongoing flood fighting measures in Hyderabad, Saturday visited different protective bunds from Hussainabad to Mula Katiar, District Tando Muhammad Khan on the left side of Indus River, to ensure that re-strengthening of weak embankments, which they identified earlier, was being carried out.
Witnessing work at the site, they expressed satisfaction over the status of bunds, but directed officers concerned to complete their task before the arrival of flash flood at Kotri Barrage. They warned the officers to be more vigilant, as water, more than estimated figure, was approaching Kotri Barrage.
The ministers observed that flood protective bunds from Hyderabad to Tando Muhammad Khan, were found weak and were not in the position to sustain pressure of water, but due to timely action by Sindh government for re-strengthening embankments and their monitoring, bunds had now been made strong enough to sustain pressure of flash floods.
On the occasion, Minister for Special Education, Syed Ali Nawaz Shah Rizvi said in order to meet any eventuality, necessary arrangements for launching relief and rescue operations had been made in advance. He directed the revenue officers to ensure that each relief camp had medical facilities and was complete in every sense so that the victims do not feel any difficulty.
