Two Panamanian cargo ships collided Saturday off the Mumbai coast, causing an oil spill from one of the vessels, but there no casualties, Indian Coast Guard officials said. Thirty-three crew members were rescued following the incident, the officials said, according to the Press Trust of India. Coast Guard officials said that MSC Chitra, a merchant vessel, collided with the MV Khalijia-III a few miles off shore.
Both the ships, measuring at least 180 metres (590 feet) in length, developed cracks following the collision. Chitra tilted sharply under the impact, resulting in an oil spill, the officials said. A senior Coast Guard official said the spill was "significant" but reported that the situation was "under control", according to the Press Trust of India. The Indian captain and 32 crew members of Chitra were evacuated, the news agency said.
