The abnormal city condition apart, some Ramazan items were seen moving higher during the week ending on August 7 while trading was witnessed as extremely uneven. The impact of rains and floods, causing transportation problem resulting in short supply, was fully evident in the shape of sharp increase in prices.
On Monday, gram 50x50 rose by Rs 150 to Rs 4700 and Rs 4900. Gram dal 50x50 rose by Rs 100 to Rs 5300, while the other type was quoted at Rs 5500. Yellow peas from Canada low type gained Rs 100 to Rs 3400 while the better quality rose by Rs 50 to Rs 3600.
Yellow peas dal from Canada was sharply up Rs 200 to Rs 3850 while the other type was quoted at Rs 4000. Wheat old with bardana lost Rs 25 to Rs 2250, while the new type was also lower by Rs 30 to Rs 2260. Gur better type rose by Rs 100 to Rs 7600 while lower variety was unchanged at Rs 7000, Khandsari was quoted at Rs 8000.
Cottonseed oilcake with bag Sindh low type depreciated by Rs 40 to Rs 1000, while the better quality lost Rs 25 to Rs 1025. Irri 6 Sindh low type shed Rs 50 to Rs 2650, while better type rose by Rs 50 to Rs 2775.
In Jodia Bazar, milk powder skimmed ended higher (Irish per bag of 25 kg) by Rs 100 to Rs 7600, Nurpur shed Rs 100 to Rs 7500 and skimmed Pak was quoted at Rs 5400.
On Tuesday, widespread violence took the toll of commodities trading. The city was also said to be under impact of mourning over the killing of a Sindh Assembly member.
On Wednesday, grain and oilseeds markets remained closed as mourning continued with the Shahadat of Sindh MPA and indeed violence that has continued without a break causing dozens of deaths.
On Thursday, Irri 6 Sindh scaled up by Rs 50 to Rs 2700 while the other quality was marked at Rs 2750. Gram 50x50 conceded Rs 50 to Rs 4650 and Rs 4850. Gram dal 50x50 shed same amount to Rs 5250 and Rs 5450. Yellow peas Canada rose by Rs 150 to Rs 4000 while the other type was at Rs 4050.
Barley Sindh and Mardan were quoted higher at Rs 2250 and new type lost same amount to Rs 2255 and Rs 2265. Castorseed Lasbela was quoted at Rs 2200 and Rs 2300. Castorseed Sindh was quoted at Rs 2200 while the other variety was quoted at Rs 2000 and cottonseed oilcake with bag in Sindh was higher by Rs 60 to Rs 1060 while the better kind was higher by Rs 65 to Rs 1090.
On Friday, not a single change was seen in the wholesale grain market, as participants were busy in preparations for Juma prayers.
On Saturday, short supply of the commodities caused unprecedented rise in prices. Masoor Punjab was sharply up by Rs 250 to Rs 8250 Masoor Canada followed the same trend, gaining Rs 200 to Rs 7200. Masoor dal Canada, however, lost Rs 200 to Rs 8800. Urad Burma was up by Rs 100 to Rs 4500. Wheat old (burdana) with bag also quoted higher at Rs 2275 and new type of the same variety at Rs 2290 and Khandsari was quoted higher at Rs 8000 and Rs 8200.
Rapeseeds Nawabshah was quoted higher at Rs 1900, that of Dadulane low type gained Rs 250 to Rs 1650 while best type was unchanged at Rs 1700. Mirpurlane low type was up by Rs 75 to Rs 1850 and good type rose by Rs 100 to Rs 1875. Til inferior type was up by Rs 100 to Rs 3800 while the best quality did not move any side at Rs 4000. Cottonseeds oicake with bag Sindh posted fresh gain of Rs 40 to Rs 1100 and good type was up by Rs 35 to Rs 1125.
In Jodia Bazar, jute goods twine finished down. The changes were: jute goods twine (per kg): 20x3 brown edged lower by Rs 14 to Rs 98, 16x3 CRT/Indus moved downward by Rs 14 to Rs 98, 8x3 went lower by Rs 25 to Rs 160 and 40x2 brown finished down by Rs 14 to Rs 94.
