Power generation capacity reduces by 2100 megawatts

Available power generation capacity has reduced by 2100MW due to disruption in gas supply to power generation plants. It was revealed in a meeting chaired by Managing Director Pakistan Electric Power Company (Pepco) Tahir Basharat Cheema. The meeting said that Gas Turbine Power Station Faisalabad is still inoperative, Guddu Power Complex is receiving 122 MMCFD gas instead of 200 MMCFD and KAPCO is receiving 10 MMCFD less than its normal requirements.
This has resulted in a shortfall of 500MW in power generation capacity of these plants. Meanwhile, AES Lalpir, Pak Gen and some units of KAPCO with a total generation capacity of 1600MW have already closed down due to floods. Cheema urged the participants to make every effort for early restoration of 2100MW as and when the situation permits.It was informed in the meeting that Pepco is meeting entire demand of over 13000MW on Saturday and therefore there was no need for loadshedding. The MD issued strict directions to CEOs of DISCOs to ensure compliance of the decision of the Federal Cabinet and the instruction of the Prime Minister to provide uninterrupted power supply to domestic consumers during Sehar and Iftar.
The MD directed all leave of employees have been cancelled and they were directed to perform duties for rehabilitation of power plants as soon as flood situation improves. Cheema also directed all the DISCOs to work round the clock to redressed consumer complaints promptly.
PEPCO, on the direction of the MD has already cut down Rs 500 million in the operational expenses of Pepco. He informed that Rs 200 million has already been deposited to the Prime Minister's Relief Fund 2010 and remaining amount would be deposited shortly. This amount is a part of Rs 33 million contributed by the employees of Pepco, he added.
The Chief Executive of Multan Electric Supply Company and Hyderabad Electric Supply Company (HESCO) apprised the MD about the progress in the distribution of 1000 tons of food items among the flood victims. Chief Financial Officer, Razi Abbas, CEO Lesco Saleem Akhtar, General Manager Human Resources, Azhar Iqbal, Director General Energy Management and Conservation, Muhammad Khalid and other senior officials attended the meeting.
