Beside other miseries of the flood survivors, the mismanagement in distribution of relief goods are also causing immense problems to the affectees in the relief camps. The worst situation of the relief goods distribution was observed in Korangi Area where a pandemonium-like situation in a relief camp caused the loss two lives.
Two flood affected women, who were in a hurry to get the food distributed in a camp set in Korangi area, were badly wounded by the mob and succumbed to wounds later. The lack of mechanism of food distribution was not only adding to the miseries of flood affectees but this way the human dignity and respect was also being damaged in these makeshifts.
Both the provincial and district governments failed to impose a guideline or mechanism for relief goods and their distribution as many NGOs wanted to distribute their goods by themselves. The way the goods were being supplied/distributed to these affectees in different camps set across the country are very inhuman and against the self-respect.
A displaced person from Jacobabad residing in a makeshift in the city said they preferred to keep fasting for more times than to try getting a packet of food. He also complained that due to the increased number of people/families a single room of school/college the family respect and dignity were also being violated.
Besides, the spread of disease in these camps has also become imminent as due to lack of proper cleaning and antibacterial arrangements the affectees especially the children and aged people were having different disease like gastro, cough, fever, etc.
For the water-borne diseases like gastro many newly born babies have lost their lives so far in these camps. Though the government and other NGOs have managed some medical facilities in these makeshifts, congestion and lack of cleaning and proper washroom facilities for the large number of people and other issues which are not addressed so far by the concerned authorities were causing spread of more disease.
The affectees were initially being accommodated in the government run camps set in areas/towns like Mehmoodabad, Cattle Colony Malir, Bin Qasim Town, Marwat Garden Mehmoodabad, Keamari Town, Guddap Town, Dalmia Center Gulistan-e-Johar, and Gulshan-e-Memar etc.
According to statistics of City District Government Karachi there are over five thousand affectees in the Polytechnic School and Tented village in Razaqabad while the relief camp at Workers Welfare Board Flats and Tented Village have more than 12000 flood affectees. Five hundred affectees are in ST-8 GBSS Cattle Colony Bin Qasim Town and 550 affectees came in ST-5 GBSS Cattle Colony Bin Qasim Town, more than 200 affectees have arrived in the camp at Lyari Resettlement Colony Hawksbay Road and 96 affectees in the camp at Merwat Park Mehmoodabad.
The government was going to set more tents and camps in other parts of the city as further displaced persons were arriving in the city through different sources. But with the increase in the number of affectees more issues are being faced by both the flood hit people and the authorities.
