Gulzar Firoz, Chairman Pakistan Tanners Association in a press statement said that while the floods claimed so many human lives, they also resulted in the deaths of a very large number of livestock. According to a rough estimate, about 0.5 million animals submerged under water which include sheep, goat, cow & buffalo. It is estimated that a total loss of livestock, in terms of value, would be around rupees 50 million.
It is feared that in the coming years, there will be acute shortage of hides and skins and even those animals, who survived the floods, may cause spread of diseases, causing deaths of more animals and deterioration of quality of hides and skins.-PR
