Morocco will cancel customs duty on imports of soft wheat for over three months to ease shortfalls in its grain harvest, the official MAP news agency reported on Sunday. The cancellation will run from September 16 to December 31, MAP quoted a government council statement as saying.
"The measure has been taken to secure a good supply for the domestic market," MAP quoted a government cabinet meeting as saying. It blamed Russia's decision to ban exports for rises in the price of wheat.
The duty of 80 percent on durum wheat will remain in place, the government said.
Morocco had raised tariffs for soft wheat imports to 135 percent from 90 percent for the June 1-December 31 period to shield local farmers from foreign competition.
