31 Aug, 2010

Federal capital has witnessed increase in crime rate during the last week as seven people, including two women were killed, five cars and five motorcycles were stolen and many people were deprived of Rs 3.4 million in ten incidents of robberies and thefts. Police arrested 38 outlaws during the week, including two lady smugglers.
The main cause behind the rise in crime in the capital even after heavy deployment of police personnel is being attributed to unemployment and inflation, besides poor planning, ineffective patrolling and main focus of police on security of important personalities.
According to figures collected by Business Recorder from 14 police stations of the capital three people including a woman were murdered in the capital during last week while four persons including a girl have been killed in road accidents.
Ten incidents of robberies and thefts were reported in the capital in which people were deprived of more than Rs 3.4 million, as per police record mostly young people were found involved in robberies and thefts cases, which is ample proof of frustration in youths.
Five cars including three Toyota Corollas, one Khyber and one FX Suzuki were stolen from different parts of the capital while five motorcycles including four Honda 125 and one CD-70 were stolen during the last week. Police seized three cars including one Toyota Corolla, two Suzuki Mehran with tampered chassis and one Suzuki motorcycle.

During the week Islamabad Police have recovered huge quantity of drugs and liquor in 13 different incidents and arrested 13 persons, including two lady smugglers. The seized drugs include 6.4-kilogram heroin, five kilogram charas, 125 bottles of liquor and 450 gram of opium. Islamabad Police registered 16 cases of cheating including cheque dishonour in which about Rs 118 million were involved.

Shahzad Town Police on Thursday busted a gang of car snatchers and dacoits namely Sher Baz Khan of Dargai Charsadda, Riaz Khan of Dhok Shah Rawalpindi, Aman Ullah of Hyatabbad Peshawar, Haleem Taj of Mardan, Kamal Khan of Dhok Jeelani Bhara Kahu Islamabad and Saeed Ullah of Bannu. They confessed that they used to snatch vehicles at gun point. Two cars, three mobile phones, three pistols and other weapons were recovered from them.
It is pertinent to note that a major part of Islamabad Police is discharging the special duty of guarding VVIPs and they could not concentrate on curbing crime rate, while surprisingly, snatching of handbags from women, cell phones and motorbikes has increased in Islamabad. As many as 1,500 police officials have been deputed for security to citizens living in the jurisdiction of 14 police stations in Islamabad while 3,500 officials have been deputed to guard Diplomatic Enclave.
