Need to address Balochs' grievances

11 Sep, 2010

Finally, the government has come out hard on the 'insurgents' of Balochistan. It has banned several organisations and handed over the powers of police to the FC. Though the measures being taken to counter threats in Balochistan seem necessary, the question is how would the government control consequences of such actions?
In my view, using power to crush the voice of the Baloch people would be devastating, not only for the province itself, but also for the rest of the country. Balochistan is part of our country, so let us not treat it like a disputed or occupied region and take abrupt measures.
What the government should do is to address the grievances of Baloch people, give employment opportunities to Baloch youths, remove FC and other forces from the area and even employ Baloch people in the armed forces. And last but not least, the government should immediately announce and declare evidence of foreign involvement, especially India and Afghanistan, in unrest in the province.
