Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority (Smeda) and Jhelum Chamber of Commerce and Industry (JCCI) have initiated a joint project for marble cluster of Jhelum to improve the energy efficiency and reduce the cost of energy.
According to Smeda sources, as many as 10 marble factories of marble cluster of Jhelum were selected and detailed energy audits were carried by Smeda energy team involving a local energy expert. Detailed analysis of transformers, motors, pumps and capacitors was carried out to highlight the energy wastages. The team of experts also conducted detailed in-house training in each marble unit.
As a result of this exercise, it is expected that SMEs of Marble Cluster would be able to reduce their electricity bills from 5 to 8 percent after the implementation of recommended measures. On the basis of gap identified in this exercise, Smeda has planned to organise a dissemination event to share the success stories with rest of the marble units of Jhelum marble cluster. It is estimated that approximately 30 marble units exist in marble cluster of Jhelum who will ultimately be benefited in terms of reduction in electricity bills from this dissemination event of energy efficiency.
