THE RUPEE: dollar turns soft

The rupee maintained its climb, gaining sharply against dollar on the currency market on Tuesday, dealers said. The rupee rose by eight paisa in relation to dollar for buying and selling at 86.12 and 86.16, they said. Some improvement in the supply of dollars helped the rupee to make sharp gains versus US currency, they said.
Interbank buy/sell rates for taka: against the dollar on Tuesday. 70.5150/70.5200 (previous 70.5450/70.5500) Call Money Rates: 3.75-6.00 percent (previous 3.75-6.50 percent). The Indian rupee was trading at Rs 44.58 versus dollar, Malaysian ringgit was available at 3.1005 in terms of the US currency and Chinese yuan was available at 6.6905 in terms of the greenback.

According to the currency dealers, the dollar resumed trading at its overnight closing of Rs 86.40 and Rs 86.80 on buying and selling side, respectively. The dollar's buying rate remained intact at Rs 86.40, while its selling rate, in the absence of buying support, was declined to Rs 86.70.
Similarly, the rupee maintained upward slide and further appreciated against the British pound. The pound's buying and selling rates were decreased from last day closing of Rs 135.50 and Rs 136.60 to Rs 135.30 and Rs 136.00, respectively, the dealers said.
The dollar resumed trading at Rs 86.05 (buying) and Rs 86.60 (selling) against same last rate. It did not observe further change in the evening session and closed at Rs 86.05 (buying) and Rs 86.60 (selling).
Pound Sterling opened at Rs 134 (buying) and Rs 135 (selling) in the morning session. It did not observe further change in the last trading hours and closed at Rs 134 (buying) and Rs 135 (selling).
