'Sasti Roti scheme rendered Punjab bankrupt'

06 Oct, 2010

Pakistan Muslim League-Q leader and former Punjab Chief Minister, Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi on Tuesday said useless projects like "Sasti Roti" scheme and setting up of taskforces have rendered Punjab province bankrupt besides putting country's biggest province under heavy debt burden of 110 billion of rupees.
He said this while talking to his party leaders at his Gulberg residence on Tuesday. "We raised alarm on the projects initiated by N-League that caused billions of rupees loss to the provincial kitty," he said, and alleged that taskforces were formed just to accommodate 'favourites'.
Elahi announced to get recovered every penny spent ruthlessly by N-League on setting up of task forces in the province. Had useless projects like "Sasti Roti" not initiated, funds could be available now in the province for the flood affectees.
He asked Punjab government to give up its anti-people policies and focus on controlling price hike and checking lawlessness and unrest in the province. He also expressed grave concern over the plight of flood affectees and asked the government to pay immediate attention to their rehabilitation.
Another PML-Q leader Moonis Elahi said trials and tribulations of Punjab's teaching community have increased manifold since 2008. Instead of giving them their rightful respect and due dignity, teachers in Punjab are being persistently harassed, humiliated and hounded by the provincial government, he noted.
Moonis flayed Punjab government's policies aimed at undermining the value and importance of teachers. He said that it was on account of the hostile and anti-teacher policies of the N-League government that Punjab's literacy rate has plummeted to 50 percent in 2010 from a healthy 62 percent in 2007.
He warned that the gross mishandling of education sector and ill treatment being meted out to educators in the province would have high adverse effects on the society.
The PML-Q leader assured his party's complete support to the protesting teachers and demanded of the provincial government to withdraw its regressive and anti-education policies, saying decisions including handing over government owned educational institutions to boards of governors appointed on political basis are in complete violation of rules.
