Independence of judiciary: Fauzia recounts her party's sacrifices

06 Oct, 2010

Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Secretary Information, Fauzia Wahab said on Tuesday that the party rendered sacrifices for independence of judiciary more than any other political party and those labelling the protesting lawyers as supporters of PPP are incorrect.
"The bomb explosion that took place on July 17, 2007 at PPP's reception camp took lives of 17 die-hard workers," she said, adding that Nargis Faiz suffered complete burnt while Dr Israr Shah was deprived of his legs.
Fauzia Wahab was reacting to Lahore High Court (LHC) move of sending District Session Judge Lahore Zawwar Ahmed Sheikh on four-month leave and appointing Sohail Nasir in his place.
She said the matter was an internal dispute of bar and bench and the PPP expresses its concern over the string of events that took place on the weekend. She criticised Punjab Law Minister Rana Sana Ullah for labelling Lahore Bar Association members as PPP workers.
PPP Secretary Information said those accusing Senator Latif Khosa and Federal Law Minister Dr Babar Awan for sponsoring the row between the bar and bench are factually incorrect, as Lahore Bar Association has refused the funds offered by the Federal Law Minister.
"Lahore Bar Association proved itself as follower of Chief Justice Supreme Court and Lahore High Court when the Federal Minister offered it funds," she said.
When asked why Latif Khosa did not condemn attack on the Chief Justice Lahore High Court office, she said Khosa might have done so to express his personal reaction of any sort. However, in the same breath, she said 'judiciary has failed to establish impartiality'.
