20th anniversary of unification of Germany celebrated

The Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany celebrated the 20th anniversary of German Unity with great zeal. It was not only a day of celebration but also fund raising event for the victims of floods, which displaced 20 million people. Ambassador of Germany, Dr Michael Koch in his opening speech said in 2010, Germany is celebrating the 20th anniversary of its reunification and 20 years of convergence between East and West Germany.
He said Germany is one country again. The treaty on German Unity comes into force on October 3, 1990. Earlier, the two-plus-four treaty between the foreign ministers of the two German states had paved the way for reunification. Regarding recent catastrophe the ambassador said, "We must acknowledge the huge losses Pakistan is facing in aftermath of natural calamity in which millions were displaced". He stressed the international community that a joint effort is need of the time to introduce development projects for livelihoods, clean drinking water and other food items for displaced people.
He said, "The contribution of German public to victims of floods is significance as school children were out in the streets to collect donation for them." He further appealed to audience to show generosity in donation for the survivals. "We have made arrangements in embassy, any body can contribute in it," he announced.
Later, Minister for Defence Ahmed Mukhtar thanked Germany's contribution for people affected by the floods. The celebration started with cutting of cake. Ambassador and minister of defence jointly cut the cake. Ambassadors and high dignitaries of foreign countries witness the celebrations.
Pakistan Muslim League (Q) leaders Chaudhary Sujjad Hussain. Mushahid Hussain Syed, Minister for Housing and Works, Rahmat ullah Khakar, Leader of House in Senate Nayyer Hussain Bukhari, Chairman HEC Javed Laghari also graced the occasion. Head of Press and Cultural Section, Embassy of Germany, Dr Thomas Ditt briefed the media person about the history of reunification of Germany 20 years back through brochures display on paper boards. He said German unification has been a successful experiment, when it comes down to it, whatever else must be said about it. Seldom has history witnessed such a thing.
During chat with minister for housing, he disclosed that ministry of housing in collaboration with House Building Finance Corporation would arrange home loans for middle and lower income segment of society to construct low income houses.
