Kalabagh Dam: KBP supports Punjab Assembly resolution

08 Oct, 2010

Kisan Board Pakistan (KBP) welcoming the passage of a resolution in favour of construction of Kalabagh Dam by the Punjab Assembly has called upon the Pakistan Muslim League (N) to get a similar resolution passed from the National Assembly too.
In a joint statement issued here Thursday, KBP President Sardar Zafar Hussein Khan and General Secretary Malik Muhammad Ramzan Rohari also urged the Prime Minister not to issue mere statements and get resolutions passed from the provincial and national assemblies in this regard.
They questioned why all the parliamentarians could not develop consensus on an issue of national importance like construction of Kalabagh Dam, if they could join hands on 18th amendment of election of the President? Kisan Board leaders claimed that the country could have avoided devastation of the recent flood if we had constructed Kalabagh dam. They said that the flood played havoc with crops standing over thousands of acres of land in 12 districts of the province, houses, irrigation infrastructure, livestock and other property. All the provincial and federal governments had failed in distribution of relief goods justifiably, they alleged.
They warned that the country could face a famine like situation that if flood-hit growers were not provided free of cost fertiliser, free seed, free electricity and their agricultural loans were not written off. They also called for reducing tariff of electricity and diesel prices and reconstruction of ruined houses at the earliest.
