India's gold rush continues, Australia reign in trap

India's gold run in Commonwealth Games shooting continued on Friday with three more titles while Australia bagged both the mens and women's trap pairs. World record holder Gagan Narang won his third gold of the Games as did pistol shooter Omkar Singh while Vijay Kumar won his second taking India's tally in shooting to 10 golds, seven silver and one bronze.
World number three Narang, who earlier won gold in the 10m air rifle individual and pairs event, teamed with Imran Hasan Khan to score a total of 2,325 points in the final of the 50m Rifle 3 Positions event. The Indian duo shattered the 16-year-old Games record of Michael Dion and Wayne Sorensen. England's pair of James Huckle and Kenny Parr edged Scotland for silver.
In the 25m rapid fire pistol, Vijay Kumar took gold with 787.5 points. The Indian army soldier had won gold on Thursday in the pairs event. Malaysia's Hasan Hasil Izwan Amir took the silver with a total of 760.3 points. Gurpreet Singh, who has won two golds for India in the pairs events of the 10m Air pistol and 25m Rapid Fire pistol, won bronze.
Omkar Singh took gold in the 10m Air Pistol individual event. This was Omkar's third and final event of the Games and he won gold in all three. He shot a total of 681.8, which included a Games record-equalling 584 in the qualification round. Singapore's Bin Gai collected his second silver of the Games with Australia's Daniel Repatcholi taking the bronze.
Two times Olympic champion in the trap, Australia's Michael Diamond, along with world number five Adam Vella, pipped India to the gold by one point in the men's pairs. Diamond with a perfect 100 and Vella with 98 thwarted former world champion Manavjit Singh Sandhu and Mansher Singh's 12-year long quest for a gold in the event. The Indians scored a total of 197 shots with Sandhu shooting 98 and Singh 99.
England won the bronze wtih a total of 193 with Aaron Heading scoring 99 and Dave Kirk 94. Diamond, who last shot a perfect 100 ten years ago in the Sydney Olympics, was elated at beating the Indians whom he considers strong rivals. Laetisha Scanlan marked her Games debut with a gold in the Women's Trap pairs event alongside Stacy Roiall. The duo shot a total of 93 points and overhauled the games record of 90 set by compatriots Nessa Jenkins and Diana Reeves in Manchester in 2002. England came second with Abbey Burton and Anita North shooting a total of 91 while Canada's Sue Nattrass and Cynthia Meyer won the bronze, with total shots of 90.
