Safron accused of misusing 200 vehicles provided by UNHCR

The Ministry of States and Frontier Regions (Safron) is misusing as many as 200 vehicles given by United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) for Afghan refugees.
"Federal Minister for Safron Najmuddin Khan is using six vehicles, Federal Secretary Muhammad Raffat Pasha has four while the joint secretary is using three vehicles. They are misusing vehicles given by United Nations for Afghan Refugees," D.G Federal Audit, Syed Gulzar Hussain Wednesday told a Special Committee of the PAC of the National Assembly.
A meeting of PAC was held with PML-N MNA Zahid Hamid in the chair at Parliament House. The Committee discussed audit reports 1990-91 and 1992-93 of Ministries of State and Frontier Region and Social Welfare and Special Education.
D G Federal Audit said that the UNHCR had given 200 vehicles to the Ministry for Afghan refugees but these are being misused by the high officials. He said that Auditor General of Pakistan recommended to PAC to stop misuse of these vehicles.
He said that total annual expenditure only on repair and maintenance without fuel on six vehicles is Rs 1.15 million while on four vehicles it is Rs 0.85 million. He said that Audit General of Pakistan recommends that Rs 1.15 million and Rs 0.85 million should be recovered form the Federal Minister for Safron and the Federal Secretary.
He said that Audit General of Pakistan is preparing a special audit report on the use of vehicles by the Federal Ministries under the directions of PAC Chairman Chaudhry Nisar Ali Kahn. He added that this report would be presented next year.
He said that there is no proper record of the vehicles and many motorcars are being misused. He said that minister could use only one car.
Chairman of Special Committee of PAC Zahid Hamid recommended to the Ministry to stop misuse of vehicles and to surrender extra cars within three days and submit its report to the Committee.
