Government should impose fair tax on elites: Lord Nazir

30 Oct, 2010

Government should impose a fair tax on super rich classes or the filthy rich elite should at least regularly pay Zakat for extending relief to resource less toiling masses. Our rulers do not pay any taxes while they are amassing ill-gotten wealth in foreign banks, said member of British Parliament, Lord Nazir Ahmad while addressing a large gathering of Punjab University teachers on Friday morning.
The Punjab University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Mujahid Kamran also spoke at the function. Pro Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Jamil Anwar Chaudhry, Registrar Professor Dr Muhammad Akhtar, Advisor Students Affairs Iftikhar Ahmad Chaudhry, senior faculty members and a large number of students were also present.
In such a situation, how can the western countries can trust us when Pakistan is in dire need of foreign charity and assistance. The government should forcibly take over assets of those wealthy persons who do not make an honest declaration of their assets and distribute the same among deserving destitute people. The opposition should also not behave like a soft ice-cream type political party, rather they should form a shadow cabinet and chalk out substitute policies for successfully running country when they come to power.
He said that rulers were saying that they will complete their tenure, but they should also do something for ameliorating plight of under-privileged classes. The Federal Interior Minister has signed an agreement with the British home secretary for exchange of prisoners and illegal immigrants. Instead the government should have entered into bi-lateral agreements for investment to provide much-needed relief to the countrymen.
