Gas shortfall likely this winter

02 Nov, 2010

A huge gas shortfall of 1000mmcfd could be witnessed in the winter season due to massive increase in heating load in different parts of the country, the SSGC officials said. The managing director of Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) Dr Faizullah Abbasi along with senior management members visited Karachi Press Club (KPC) on Monday. The issue of gas shortage in the country was discussed in detail during this visit.
They said that gas production in the country is around 4000mmcfd, out of which 800mmcfd is supplied directly to the fertiliser sector. From the remaining, 1200mmcfd is supplied to Sui Southern Gas Company and 2000mmcfd to Sui Northern Gas Pipeline. "During the winter season, the total demand of gas increases to around 5000mmcfd in the country, 1000mmcfd higher than the total production," they said. A gas load management plan is announced every year and gas supply to some sectors is curtailed, they added.
