Mystery shrouds Niazi's disappearance

09 Nov, 2010

Mystery still shrouds the disappearance of Ayaz Khan Niazi, former Chairman of National Insurance Corporation Limited (NICL), while Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has initiated an inquiry into his disappearance. Interior Ministry sources said that it has issued 'Red Warrant' for Niazi. However, the Ministry officially denied release of any information on issuance of 'Red Warrant' Naizi.
According to some unconfirmed reports, Niazi managed to escape from the country to Dubai on forged documents. Nasrullah Gondal, Deputy Director, FIA, Islamabad International Airport, said that there was no chance that any person who is on ECL could dodge the law enforcement agencies. "We are vigilant here and checking documents minutely to avert any such attempt", he added.
"If you provide me the passport Number, or CNIC Number of Ayaz Khan Niazi, I can give you any information; otherwise, I am sorry", was the reply of Gondal, when this scribe insisted. Another director level FIA officer said that there was no chance that Niazi had used any airport to escape from the country. "Maybe he travelled to Afghanistan, and then left for Dubai," he said.
The escape of a high profile accused like Niazi, involved in a mega corruption scam, has raised questions about the credibility of the law enforcement agencies, particularly FIA, which is responsible to check illegal immigration and remain present on all exit and entry points. Sources in FIA said that after completion of the investigation in the NICL corruption scam the agency was making efforts to arrest Niazi who went underground as some influential people were protecting him.
