Sugar price on Thursday reduced to Rs 100 per kilogram after mills reportedly enhanced the commodity's supply to the mass-market, market sources said. Sugar price had shot up to a record level of Rs 105 -110 per kilogram on the retail market early this week, following a dispute over minimum sugarcane support price between the millers and growers, bringing the cane crushing to a halt.
The unprecedented increase triggered political outcry from the opposition across the country, which according to traders brought the government relatively under pressure to take steps for the commodity's price reduction.
However, traders see the retail price of sugar still higher, saying the government had done nothing to improve the supply of sweetener to market through Trading Corporation of Pakistan. They said the government had also failed to mediate between the sugar millers and growers for resolution of their bilateral issues adding, "Everyone from top to bottom was involved in the sugar price surge".
