THE RUPEE: dollar moves both ways

Rates moved both ways on the currency market on Monday ahead of Eid-ul-Azha holiday, dealers said. The rupee inched up with nominal gain of two paisa at 85.45 against dollar for buying and rose by three paisa for selling at 85.52, they said. In first Asian trade dollar rose in choppy trade marred by thin liquidity, hitting a five-week high against Japanese yen, as US bond yields soared.

According to dealers, the dollar resumed trading at Rs 85.25 and Rs 85.50 as buying and selling rates, and closed at Rs 85.00 and Rs 85.50 on buying and selling counters, respectively.
Similarly, the rupee appreciated by 50 paisa and 20 paisa against the pound sterling on buying and selling counters, respectively. The pound was purchased and sold at Rs 135.00 and Rs 136.50 as compared to last Friday closing of Rs 135.50 and Rs 136.30, respectively, dealers said.
The dollar resumed trading at Rs 85.40 (buying) and Rs 85.50 (selling) against last rate of Rs 86.20 (buying) and Rs 86.30 (selling). It did not observe further change in the evening session and closed at Rs 85.40 (buying) and Rs 85.50 (selling).
Pound Sterling opened at Rs 136 (buying) and Rs 136.20 (selling) in the morning session. It did not observe further change in the last trading hours and closed at Rs 136 (buying) and Rs 136.20 (selling).
