Power demand matches supply on the eve of Eid

17 Nov, 2010

Power demand matched with the generation capacity of the Pakistan Electric Power Company (Pepco) on Eid and ultimately brining the demand and supply gap to nil on Tuesday. According to Pepco sources, a drastic reduction in usage of air conditioners, sucking some 5000MW directly out of supply has filled the gap between demand and supply.
They said the situation would remain manageable until last week of December when canal desilting process would start in the country. It would hit the hydel generation directly and the country would again experience load shedding.
However, they added in the same breath that the thermal generation is likely to improve by then and the system would bear the shock of a significant cut in hydel generation. The Pepco sources said power generation equalled to demand of 11517MW. Interestingly, supply to the KESC also improved to 720MW. Hydel generation remained 5650MW, followed by 1881MW from thermal, 3956MW from IPPs and 30MW from RPPs.
