In respect of national leadership, DG ISPR said that General Kayani holds all national leaders including PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif in high esteem. The recent tranche of memos, obtained by whistleblower site WikiLeaks had shown that General Kayani informed the US ambassador during a March 2009 meeting that he "might, however reluctantly," pressurise Zardari to resign. According to a cable, Kayani was quoted as saying that he might support Asfandyar Wali Khan, chief of Awami National Party (ANP), as the new president but not Nawaz Sharif.
In another cable of WikiLeaks, US vice president Joe Biden recounted Britain's the then prime minister Gordon Brown's conversation with Zardari last year.
