Speakers call for continued support to R&D

The participants at 10th 'Biennial Conference of Pakistan Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology' (PSBMB) have called for continued unhindered support to research activities in the universities of the country. The five-day conference concluded, here on Sunday, at Dr. A.Q. Khan Institute of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering (KIBGE), University of Karachi.
The conference urged authorities that the resources for higher education should not only be continued unhindered, but further enhanced to ensure growth and quality of scientific research, which is vital for the development and improving quality of life of common man in the country.
Prof. Jawaid Altaf Baig, President PSBMB, Prof. M. Waheed Akhtar, General Secretary PSBMB, Prof. Pervaiz Iqbal of Aga Khan University, Prof Muhammad lshaq of Sir Syed Medical College and Dr Younus Barozai of Baluchistan University acknowledged healthier funding for science and research activities in recent years that has created a conducive environment for scientific activities.
However, they were of the opinion that there is a need to enhance resources and encourage healthy trends to meet the challenges being faced by the country.
On he occasion, about 150 research papers were presented in the form of talks and posters from across the country. The papers covered a vast spectrum of biochemistry and molecular biology including, agriculture, health and medicine, biotechnology, drug design. Memorial lectures for Professor Zain-ul-Abedin and Professor MID Chughtai were also delivered on the occasion. The 11th Biennial Conference of PSBMB will be held in Khyber-Pukhtunkhwa in year 2012.
