Karachi Electricity Supply Company (KESC) has started organising Energy Conservation activities in the city to educate people regarding energy consumption and saving issues. Amir Abbasi, General Manager Media and Public Relations, KESC told Business Recorder that the objective of the Energy Conservation Initiative is to create awareness and eventually transfer the ownership of the movement to the citizens of Karachi, with KESC working as the lead programme driver.
He said that the consumers are unaware of the fact that every appliance consumes energy on standby mode and how much electricity does any electric gadget consume. People also don't even know that a night bulb, which is perceived as a "Zero Power" bulb, consumes 15 watts, he added.
He informed Business Recorder that in this regard KESC organised a one-day Energy Conservation activity in a super store located at Shahra-e-Faisal here on Sunday. More than 800 consumers were briefed on the Energy Conservation initiative through demonstrations. Consumers were informed that Energy Savers save 75 percent electricity in comparison to a normal incandescent bulb and also about the difference between the consumption of conventional tube lights (with chokes) and T5 tube lights.
Abbasi said that consumers were also briefed regarding other energy misuse and consumption at the activity. The response from visitors at the event who showed keen interest in the activity being carried cut for the welfare of the general public, he added.Abbasi said that the Karachi Energy Conservation Programme a social service initiative and an important facet of city's energy usage policy, with the principal goal of saving 200MW of electricity in the city by 2011. KESC would organise more energy conservation activities on every weekend till next two months, he added.
