Vice-Chancellor Punjab University Professor Dr Mujahid Kamran has stated that the administration is endeavouring to further improve existing facilities and infrastructure at varsity fish farm so that modern fisheries research facilities can be extended to students and researchers.
He was inaugurating the sale of fish at University Fish Farm at New Campus here on Tuesday. Dean Life Sciences Professor Dr Shahida Hasnain, Director IBB Professor Dr Amin Athar, Chairman Physics Department Professor Dr Shaukat Ali, Advisor Colonel Ikramullah Khan, Resident Officers-I & II Professor Javed Sami and Malik Muhammad Zaheer, faculty members and a large number of students were also present.
In his brief welcoming remarks, PU Registrar and Chairman Zoology Department Professor Dr Muhammad Akhtar said the event is organised by Zoology Department at the start of winter each year. He said the Research Fish Farm was initially run under the supervision of Dean Life Sciences Professor Dr Shahida Hasnain.
However, the project was transferred to the Zoology Department three years back. The objective of establishment of Fish Farm was to create facilities for fisheries research students at BS, MSc, MS, MPhil and PhD level. The fisheries study area is very well developed in Zoology Department with four learned professors and supporting staff. So far, four PhDs, ten MS/MPhil and many BS and MSc research students have completed their research projects. The numbers of MSc students who opt fisheries, as elective subjects are increasing day by day. The students are taking full advantage of PU Research Fish Farm facilities. 12 students from BS, MSc, MS, MPhil and PhD classes are doing their research projects on various aspects of fisheries.
While Punjab University Pro vice-chancellor Professor Dr Jamil Anwar also presided over a meeting of the Convocation Committee for 119th Convocation 2010 in New Campus here on Tuesday. In addition to Registrar Professor Dr Muhammad Akhtar, Controller Examinations Dr Zahid Karim Khan, Treasurer Dr Uzma Ikram, Dean Education Professor Dr Hafiz Muhammad Iqbal, Project Director Sheikh Muhammad Ali, Convenors of reception, stage, hall, address, parking, transport and media Committees were also present.
At the outset of meeting, the Controller Dr Zahid Karim Khan gave a comprehensive presentation on the up-to-date progress made by respective convenors of committees constituted for ensuring befitting the convocation arrangements. Expressing his satisfaction over the preparations so far made, Dr Jamil Anwar hoped the student community would do their utmost to organise and exhibit exemplary discipline and decorum during the convocation in keeping with the glorious traditions of their alma mater.
