Millions of children in flood affected areas are at risk of missing a crucial school year due to inaccessibility to schools. Prior to the flood, almost one out of every two children were out of school. The floods have exacerbated this situation, this has been disclosed in a recently released Unicef Floods Progress Report.
In flood-hit areas the new academic year started in September, leaving millions of children at risk of missing out on their crucial school year due to damaging of schools or their occupation by IDPs and non-availability of learning materials, the report said. According to the report over 10,000 schools were either partially or fully damaged and almost 2,900 schools had been occupied by internally displaced persons (IDPs) during the crisis.
