CEC refers four bogus degree holders' cases to DPO

Chief Election Commissioner of Pakistan Justice Hamid Ali Mirza (Retd) on Tuesday referred the cases of four lawmakers to the District Police Officers (DPOs) for registration of criminal cases for having bogus degree holders. The case has been registered under section 78(3) (d) of the Representation of the People Act, 1976 that is cognisable offence under section 94 of the said Act.
The case has been registered against Sardar Ali, MPA (PK-34), Haji Nasir Mehmood, Ex-MPA (PP-111), Saima Aziz (Muhi-ud-din) MPA (PP-Reserved) and Safina Saima Khar, MPA (PP-Reserved). The ECP was conducting enquiry in the cases of fake degree holders on the direction of Supreme Court.
The Supreme Court in its judgement had observed that "The Election Commission is directed to initiate action against all such persons who are accused of committing corrupt practices, forgery and using, genuine, documents which they knew or at least had reason to believe to be forged." The ECP/HEC Joint Committee had given them opportunity regarding genuineness of their degrees and to prove the claim of their graduation at the time of filing of nomination papers for the General Elections of February 18, 2008.
