Afghans protest Iran fuel truck ban

08 Jan, 2011

Hundreds of Afghans are demonstrating outside the Iranian Embassy in Kabul to protest Iran's blocking of thousands of fuel trucks at the border with Afghanistan, a move that has sent domestic fuel prices soaring as winter sets in. The unofficial ban on fuel trucks crossing the Iran-Afghanistan border began about two weeks ago.
Afghan officials say Iran has told them the trucks were being stopped for national security reasons a reference to suspicion the fuel is bound for Nato forces. But Afghan officials insist it is destined for civilian consumer use. About 300 people demonstrated Friday outside the Iranian Embassy.
