Special Investigation Unit (SIU), Sindh on Wednesday unveiled the names of three detained students, who were allegedly involved in a Karachi University bomb blast on December 28, 2010. The suspects included Mohammad Omer alias Chota, son of Mohammad Aslam, Hafeez Ullah alias Bilal, son of Naimat Ullah Khan and Syed Faiz Ali, son of Syed Mussadiq Ali Shah.
According to police sources, they were former students of KU and were running their own group 'Punjabi Mujahideen'. The police sources said these three suspects were detained on Friday and Saturday, whereas, Mohammad Faiz was picked up from North Karachi on Friday while the others two were detained outside the Karachi University on Saturday.
However, SIU chief SSP Raja Omer Khitab has dispelled the impression, saying that the police have arrested them after a brief encounter at Maripur road and recovered two hand grenades, one Kalashnikov, two repeaters, two TT pistols and one High-roof from their possessions. These suspects were accused of injuring at least five ISO members through a small bomb blast occurred outside the cafeteria of KU during Zohr prayer.
He said these suspects belong to the Islami Jamiat-e-Tulba, which comprises on around 150 active and inactive workers of the IJT. The group is not following the IJI or Jamaat-e-Islami policies but abiding by the policies of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan and got trained from Waziristan, Augi and Meeran Shah.
The officer further said that during the initial interrogation, the suspects confessed that they had established their own group 'Punjabi Mujahideen' after dismissal from IJT in 2007.
The SSP Khitab said the suspects also admitted that they planned to target the ISO men inside the university by planting a bomb device on December 25. For the purpose, they first captured the video footage and then planted a bomb connected with the mobile phone, which was exploded by the accused Omer on December 28 during Zohr prayer. The bomb was provided by accused Shahid Khan who resided in Gulshan-e-Hadeed, said SIU chief.
