Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of National Assembly directed the Ministry of Interior to submit details of the target killers arrested in Karachi so far. The meeting was chaired by Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan here on Monday who expressed serious concerns on the deteriorating law and order situation and targeted killing incidents in the metropolitan, seeking a detailed report from ministry of interior in this regard.
Responding to committee members, Secretary Interior Qamar Zaman Chaudhry said that no operation was underway in Karachi, but efforts are being made to improve the law and order in the metropolis. He said the special powers have been delegated to rangers for a period of three months to counter the menace.
"Rangers are not conducting any operation in Karachi, as they were only given police powers for three months to improve law and order situation in the city," he said Reviewing the audit report of Interior Ministry for the fiscal year 2008-09, the Interior Secretary said that rangers were working under Sindh Home Department.
An audit officer apprised the meeting that the project officer of Punjab Rangers had withdrawn Rs 150 million from a profit loss bank account of the force without any authority and deposited the amount in another commercial bank. Moreover, profit on the amount was also utilised un-lawfully.
Chairman committee recommended that departments must take action against those involved in irregularities and corruptions to protect the image of the institutions. He further directed the secretary to put names of those involved in financial bungling in government departments on the Exit Control List (ECL) only on the recommendation of the PAC.
The committee directed secretary interior to provide comprehensive details about arms licences and targeted killings in the next hearing of the parliamentary body.
