Under the directions of Chief Minister Punjab, Mohammad Shahbaz Sharif, City District Government Lahore (CDGL) has launched privatisation process of solid waste management system in the city.
The newly constituted Lahore Waste Management Company (LWMC) was formed by the government as a corporate body to facilitate the process and bring efficiencies through modernisation and public private partnerships in waste management.
The first such experiment is proving to be a success model which was launched on December 20th, 2010 and has already started showing its visible results in six selected model areas where selected union councils have been handed over to private sector waste management companies.
'Waste Busters' was awarded the contract for Gulshan Ravi and Township areas where they had deployed their team to clean up the entire area. The efforts made a clear difference in the state of environment in these areas as the residents started using garbage bags provided by the company and dispose their waste daily at a fixed time instead of throwing it randomly in open areas. Moreover, especially designed Rickshaws were deputed in each area, which went door to door and collected garbage daily from each household.
"Our area was one of the most polluted part of the city as CDGL had always neglected these areas since they were not posh areas nor rich and powerful personalities lived there", said Mian Khurshid Ahmed, a local resident. "But now we feel as if we live in defence area", he said adding that state of cleanliness will also bring a rise in property value which would be an added benefit for the residents.
