Construction of KBD: Supreme Court asked to direct CCI to build consensus

01 Feb, 2011

A petition has been filed in the supreme court seeking court directions for Council of Common Interests (CCI) to build consensus among the federating units for Kalabagh Dam. The petition was filed by President Engineers Study Forum, Mian Fazal Ahmed and Chairman Pakistan Agri Forum, Muhammad Ibrahim Mughal.
The petitioners said CCI is not playing its due role for the construction of KBD. They said that the country's water level would drop to 1,000 M3 (cubic feet) per capita in 2025 and the dam could save agriculture during extreme water scarcity in these days.
They pointed out that Tarbela and Mangla reservoirs are rapidly losing their storage capacity because of sedimentation so KBD is the need of the nation and CCI has to perform its role to get the provinces agreed for its construction. The petitioners requested the court to direct CCI to take up the matter to formulate and build consensus and exercise supervision and control of KBD's construction in the national interest.
