14 killed in Congolese rail accident

03 Feb, 2011

At least 14 people were killed Wednesday and around 20 injured when a goods train derailed in western Democratic Republic of Congo, local authorities said. The train derailed and fell onto its side at 9:00 am (0800 GMT) five kilometres from Tshimbulu station in Western Kasai province.
"Eight carriages derailed and five are lying completely on their side on the track," a local chief, Laudes Nkashama, told AFP. Nkashama blamed the dilapidated state of the 40-year-old track for the accident. The train was travelling on the Kananga-Lubumbashi line between Western Kasai and the Katanga mining province in the south-west, he said.
