Militants have destroyed around 710 schools in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in various districts of the province in the last two years. Almost 640 schools were either completely or partially damaged in only Malakand Division. The remaining 70 schools were destroyed in other districts of the province.
The information was provided to the legislators of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly in response to a question of the Mufti Said Janan of the JUI-F. Out of 164 completely destroyed schools of Malakand Division, reconstruction of 112 schools has been started while the remaining 52 were under the tendering process.
Similarly, amongst the 476 partially damaged schools, construction work on 334 had already been completed while work on 142 remaining schools was in progress. Out of 70 schools of other districts, 38 were completely damaged while 32 were partially damaged. Construction work on five completely destroyed schools has been started and the remaining 33 are passing through the phase of the preparation of PC-I and approvals. Out of 32 partially damaged schools work on two has been initiated and the remaining 30 were under process at PC-I and approval phases.
In the completely destroyed 164 schools of Malakand Division, the highest number of schools was targeted in district Swat where 121 schools were targeted. Around 88 girls schools were targeted as compared to boys schools. In Lower Dir, militants targeted 20 boys and girls schools. In Buner, a total of 14 schools were targeted followed by 11 schools in Upper Dir and only three in district Shangla. The less affected district is Malakand where so far no attack on schools has been reported.
In the suburban areas of the provincial metropolis, Peshawar almost 19 schools have been targeted in which 12 were girls and 7 were boys schools, while 6 schools were damaged due to law order situation in Bannu included four girls and two boys schools. Similarly, four schools were damaged in Hangu where three boys and one girls school were damaged with the same of number of damaged schools in Tank while three, and one each schools were damaged in districts Charsadda, Tank and Kohat respectively.
Meanwhile, Speaker, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly, Kiramatullah Khan Monday directed the Provincial Service Commission (PSC) for filling the vacant posts of teachers in the province as soon as possible in the province. The directives were issued in response to the supplementary questions of Abdul Akbar Khan and Anwar Khan of PPP and Qalandar Khan Lodhi of PML-Q.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Minister for Elementary and Secondary Education, Sardar Hussein Babak on Monday told house that the Provincial Service Commission (PSC) had assured the completion of the recruitment of 2800 SETs teachers by June 2011 in the province.
He said that interviews for filling the vacant posts of SETs (humanities) have already been conducted and they would be appointed by the end of the current month, while recruitment process of SETs (Science) teachers would be completed by June 2011.
The provincial minister said that in past, the education department never remained priority of the governments. He said that 95 percent vacant posts of the subject specialists (SS) have been filled and the notifications of the appointment of 138 headmasters and headmistress have been issued last month. The provincial government, he said paying full attention to the education department and taking measures for the resolution of the longstanding problems in this regard. The minister said that the newly announced service structure for the teachers will also help resolved the deficiency of the SETs teachers as a large number of Certificate of Teaching (C.T) Teachers will also be promoted as SETs teachers.
