Residential areas: KBCA unable to check rising multistorey buildings

10 Mar, 2011

The Karachi Building Control Authority (KBCA) has not been able to check the increasing number of multistorey buildings being constructed in the residential areas of the city. Sources told Business Recorder here on Wednesday that the illegal construction of multistory buildings in the residential areas of Lyari, Mehmoodabad, Orangi Town and other underdeveloped areas is on the rise.
When contacted the KBCA authorities, said that such constructions are illegal and a clear violation of the rules and regulations of the authority. They further said that steps were being taken to control such constructions and many illegal buildings had also been demolished, however, they admitted that they had not been completely successful so far.
They told that they do not have the required manpower, as with a few thousand employees, the KBCA can not monitor the entire city. They termed 'political interference' another hurdle, which is hindering their efforts to eradicate the growing menace.
