Partly Facetious: The government giving a strike call!

12 Mar, 2011

"I can't believe this!"
"If you are referring to the strike call by PPP then let me tell you that the President is genuinely concerned about what he regards as his own prerogative being usurped by the courts and..."
"President or the Zardis?"
"Don't try to create divisions between the Zardi ranks...you know and I know that the President no longer needs to cite wills as he is no longer the heir apparent but has taken over the chairmanship of the party and until and unless someone challenges that, which is highly unlikely at present considering that challenges to the leadership come when a party is out of power..."
"OK, so the President has given a strike call, or shall we say the entire Zardi cadre has given a strike call but it is to be limited to Sindh."
"Correct, that's the only province the PPP has an outright majority."
"But isn't that rather silly!"
"Why?"
"Well, I think its silly for two reasons: first and foremost a government giving a strike call and urging transporters not to ply the roads and giving a holiday to all educational institutions would imply a loss of how much? I mean if Karachi alone is shut down then I believe the loss to the country is in crores and given the fact that the current state of the economy leaves a lot to be desired such an action defies logic."
"The President is a student of history not economics, you can't blame him for not knowing."
"Don't be facetious."
"Anyway, the second thing that defies logic is the fact that the government has invoked the Sindh card. Politicians threaten and cajole but do not invoke a card till absolutely necessary and lets be honest the do or die situation is not yet."
"But Sindh card without MQM which has shown it can shut down Karachi may backfire."
"Hush, wait and see."
