Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has arrested Pakistan Muslim League-Q leader Moonis Elahi MPA following rejection of his bail from the Lahore High Court (LHC) on Thursday. Sources said that FIA officials had given time to Moonis Elahi for presenting himself for arrest after rejection of his bail by the LHC.
Moonis left the LHC to his Gulberg residence from where he reached to local FIA office for his arrest. Moonis presented himself voluntarily for arrest at the local FIA office, where he reached along with party activists amid slogans in his favour. Moonis Elahi, who is son of former Punjab Chief Minister Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi, is facing NICL case and was on interim bail from the Lahore High Court (LHC) that was rejected on Thursday. He will be produced before a local court on Friday.
Talking to reporters before his arrest, Moonis expressed full confidence in courts and said he would prove his innocence. "We are not afraid of arrests because it is part of our training," he said, adding: "I would prove my innocence." The PML-Q leader said he had not committed any wrong and the FIA would not be able to prove its case.
To a query, he said no Exit Control List (ECL) could stop him from proceeding abroad. A leader of Pakistan Muslim League-Q Chaudhry Zaheeruddin also rushed to the FIA office to meet Moonis Elahi. He told reporters that arrest of Moonis Elahi should serve as an eye opener for those who were blaming his party leadership of striking a deal with the ruling party.
He said the PML leadership had a meeting with President Asif Ali Zardari to save the system. "We would not allow holding of mid-term polls in the country," he said. He further said that scriptwriters of Raymond David and Moonis Elahi's cases are the same and they would be exposed soon. Earlier, Additional DG FIA Zafar Qureshi told the LHC that FIA has to get Rs 320 million back from Moonis Elahi in NICL case. Moonis Elahi's counsel stated that his client was being accused, adding that Zafar Qureshi has personal conflict with Moonis.
