Incomplete repair work on dykes may delay paddy sowing

22 Mar, 2011

The repair works on dykes and bunds damaged during last year's floods in Muzaffargarh, Rajanpur, Dera Ghazi Khan and Rahim Yar Khan may not be completed before paddy and Kharif sowing season. The farming community is worried because sowing season is around the corner. If the work was not completed in time it would not be possible to release water in the canals which was the main source of cultivation of paddy.
The farming community's other concern was quality of the repair work, as it may create problems during monsoon season, which is just four months away. The repair work was pending due to shortage of fund and mismanagement of the fund that has already been released.
Reports suggest that people of area expressed their concern particularly on the repair work carried out on the dykes, which suffered huge damage during floods. Residents of Daira Din Panah, Kot Addu, Ghazi Ghat, Jampur, Rajanpur, Rojhan have expressed apprehensions over the delay in carrying out repair works on flood protection bunds, which were swept away in flood. Prime Minister Gilani had assured that the bunds would be reconstructed as soon as possible and had also issued instruction for completion of the work in time.
