Broadening tax base: FBR asks field formations to constitute special BTB Unit

22 Mar, 2011

A special team of tax officials, 'Broadening the Tax-Base Unit' (BTB Unit) in each Large Taxpayer Unit (LTU) and Regional Tax Office (RTO) will be tasked to utilise third party information before dispatching notices to the wealthy persons for documentation of the economy.
In this connection, the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has issued instructions to the field formations here on Monday for constitution of special teams of tax officials to utilise third party data. Sources told Business Recorder that the Director General 'Broadening the Tax Base (BTB)' Shahid Hussain Asad shared national plan to document the economy during the last Chief Commissioners' Conference.
Shahid Asad explained that the Directorate General BTB has been assigned the task to supervise the work of obtaining third party data for disseminating in focused manner to small units in RTOs/LTUs for expanding the tax base. The BTB Unit in each RTO/LTU will be closely monitored by the Commissioner and comprise at least two officials of Grade 19, 18 and Grade 17.
Each Unit of the BTB will report to the Director General BTB on technical matters, otherwise the special team of BTB officials in the field formations would be responsible for collection and effective utilisation of third party information to document the economy. An important aspect of DG BTB's plan for documentation is that the prioritisation of cases has been done for proper utilisation of data.
According to the FBR decision, a separate 'Broadening the Tax-Base Unit' will be established in each reformed unit under the command of Grade-19 official assisted by two Grade 18-17 officials, which will be supervised by the concerned Commissioner Inland Revenue. The BTB Unit will report for technical work to the Director General BTB.
