Reference to Supreme Court: parties accuse PPP of making a political issue

07 Apr, 2011

Three political parties - the PML-Q, PML-N and Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) - have accused the PPP of creating a political issue by sending a reference to the Supreme Court on Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto case. While talking exclusively to Business Recorder, Pakistan Muslim League (PML-Q) leader Tariq Azeem, said that all political parties accept that the murder of former Prime Minister Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto was a judicial murder.
But the PPP is making it a political issue while the country is facing more important issues on so many fronts. Not only all local political parties but also the international community maintained that the decision to hang former Prime Minister Bhutto was not right. He urged the government to pay attention to resolving issues facing the country instead of creating another political issue.
"First, the PPP should resolve the murder case of its Chairperson and Former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto. After all the PPP workers also want the perpetrators of Benazir Bhutto's murder be brought to justice," he said. PML-N leader Siddiqul Farooq said, "it is right of PPP to send reference but it is also trying to grind a political axe."
Senator Professor Khurshid Ahmed of JI said that 32 years have passed but the PPP never raised this issue. Today the party is raising it for political purposes only, he claimed. He said that reference was sent to the Apex Court under Article-186 in which the Supreme Court can give an opinion. But it cannot reconsider the case nor it can revisit the judgement. He queried as to why the PPP government waited three decades before raising the issue.
