Sunni Tehrik workers' arrest sparks violence

07 Apr, 2011

Violence gripped Mehmoodabad on Wednesday and a passenger bus was set on fire following the arrest of Sunni Tehrik (ST) workers. According to details, the inhabitants of Mehmoodabad Parsi Colony turned violent after the Special Investigation Unit (SIU) of Sindh police arrested an activist of ST namely Ghulam Rasool along with two others.
The protesters claimed that the SIU team had arrested the workers without any reason. They took to the streets and pelted stones on moving vehicles and set a passenger bus U-4 on fire. Meanwhile, the spokesman of ST Fahim Sheikh said that the detained activists of ST had had a scuffle with drug peddlers. They had also registered a case against the criminals in the area police station. He claimed that the police, instead of taking stern action against the drug peddlers, detained ST workers without any logical reason. When contacted SP Ali Raza could not clarify the matter.
