Mukhtaran Mai case: Aitzaz to file review petition

24 Apr, 2011

Chaudhry Aitzaz counsel of Mukhtaran Mai has announced to challenge the Supreme Court verdict on her case through a review petition. In a press release issued here Saturday, Aitzaz said "I have consulted with Mukhatarn Mai, and we have decided that a petition seeking review of the Judgement April 21 will be filed soon'.
He was deeply disappointed at Supreme Court's verdict of acquitting all but one accused in Mukhtaran Mai case. He stated that the learned majority judges have disregarded cogent evidence and failed to notice actual material on the record and the facts proved thereby. He stated that majority judgement is manifestly flawed and, in material particulars, is not even based on the evidence available on the record.
He said judges have also misread evidence that they have adverted to. The learned judges have also failed to take notice of the social backdrop, which was established on the record itself, and in the context of which the horrendous crime of gang-rape was committed, reported and investigated, he added. Hence, decision of the majority needs to be reviewed and recalled Aitzaz added.
